90. 21 Questions by J Hus (50 Cent)
God bless the Live Lounge.
89. The Chain by Thunderpussy (Fleetwood Mac)
88. Dancing in the Dark by Wilder Adkins (Bruce Springsteen)
Yeah, it’s been covered a lot. But this one is good, too.
87. Not for Me by Perfume Genius (Bobby Darin cover)
86. A Whiter Shade of Pale by Rhye (Procol Harum)
85. Paranoid by Kali Uchis (Kanye West)
84. Emo-Tion by Various Artists
A full album of Carly Rae Jepsen’s full album. For charity.
83. Frozen by Robin Kester and Moon Moon Moon (Madonna)
82. Lipstick Vogue by The Arctic Monkeys (Elvis Costello)
81. Five Covers and a Song by Andrew McCombs
Radiohead. The Strokes. Loudon Wainwright III. Blake Mills. Lucinda Williams. Quite a varied selection. My favorite cut is Reptilla (The Strokes).
80. Helter Skelter by Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson (The Beatles)
One of my fave songs by the Beatles–frequently covered by hard rockers. It’s hard to do bad, and this version proves that yet again.
79. Sitting on the Dock of the Bay by A$AP Rocky (Otis Redding)
78. Fight the Power by Brownout (Public Enemy)
I haven’t heard their whole project, which covers PE’s seminal Fear of a Black Planet album, but I bet it’s good.
77. Ooh Child by Jill Sobule (5 Stairsteps)
Sobule covers a few songs on her new album. The Warren Zevon cover was already released a few years ago (but Jill’s vocals on “Don’t Let Us Get Sick” will break your heart), so this is the new one. It’s excellent. And so is the entire album–it’s one of the year’s best. If I didn’t have it on my other list, I would have placed this song higher on the covers list–just trying to give everyone fair space and coverage.
76. Grave Neighbors Volume 2 by various artists
A pay-what-you-like collection of modern bands covering slightly less modern bands, released on Halloween. A few choice cuts include Like Eating Glass by Coma Regalia (Bloc Party) and Frightened Rabbit’s “Backwards Walk,” covered by Baby Grill.
