I’m taking a moment to shout out two covers EPs today, one old one new, both very different.
First, in January of this year New Orleans Brass Jazz band Black Tie Brass released “Mostly Covered,” which is a misnomer. It’s actually three original instrumental ranging from bebop funk to slowed down hipsway and then three wordless covers of Kanye, Gnarls Barkley, and Michael Jackson.
And where BTB picked “cool” songs to cover, Champions of Breakfast go the other way. With a much simpler sound, and including the lyrics, Champions of Breakfast in 2008 offered “The Covers Collection.” I just found it a few weeks ago, so I’m writing about it now. CoB decided to go with a much cornier selection of songs like Simply the Best (Tina Turner), Obsession (Animotion), and Starship’s We Built This City.
What, no “Breakfast in America?”
