The City is Coming to Erase it All by Fink

This album is much, much better than its word of mouth. It’s a special brand of indie folk, where nearly every song is an extended foray into a theme. I want to say it’s almost “jammy” but the music isn’t freeform enough–or complex enough–for the jam-band brand. Rather, the strings are perfectly orchestrated on each cut to allow the mind to wander–and the lyrics compliment the inspiration to ponder by being simple yet poignant. It’s not ambient because it’s definitely intended to be in the foreground, but it does so without being aggressively dominant.

Maybe the word I’m looking for is soothing?

I don’t know enough about this band’s discography to compare to their prior work (they’ve been at it for 10+ years), but I love this record.
