I don’t know what it is about Mavis Staples. She makes “standard” blues/gospel with no attempt to update the sound, and yet it never goes out of style. I love her work.
I guess it’s talent.
“Carry Me Home” is a live album–the last one she made with the legendary Levon Helm back in 2011. The album mixes traditional hymns, old soul covers, and more recent gospel tunes like the amazing, “Handwriting on the Wall.”
Get this. It’s fantastic.
