In celebration of Jesus’ birthday, which is just a week away, here’s my 20 favorite Christmas tunes.
Starting at the bottom and working up:
#20: The Night Santa Went Crazy by Weird Al Yankovic (1996).
I swore I wouldn’t put novelty songs on this list, but this one was just too damn good. It’s a spoof of an existing tune, like so many of Al’s songs, this time Soul Asylum’s “Black Gold,” and it’s actually really, really funny. So let’s get the novelty stuff out of the way early, start with this one, and then move along quickly to a classic, tomorrow.
Further listening: The obvious other novelty song is The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late)” by Alvin and the Chipmunks. Oh, and there’s my personal favorite by Bugs Bunny voicemaster Mel Blanc, “I Yust Go Nuts at Christmas.” But the best is the one I almost chose instead of this one: Monty Python’s “Christmas in Heaven.”
