I love this record.
Love it!
Billy Childish is a versatile artist, with many talents and projects. You may know him from The Headcoates, or from his extensive autobiographical writings. He’s produced dozens of albums, and this most recent one is probably my favorite.
It sounds like something ancient–like a collection of folk/blues songs from the ’60s. And speaking of the ’60s, he covers You Gotta Move (The Rolling Stones) and gives it a much deeper feel of authenticity. He also pays tribute to one of the greatest songwriters of all time in a song titled “Joe Strummer’s Grave.” The song doesn’t have a lot to do with Strummer, but I’m certain he’d love the lyrics and feel honored to be in the chorus: “Cool Britannia, Jesus saves/Rupert Murdoch rules the waves/Richard Branson doesn’t shave/And Joe Strummer’s lying in his grave…”
There is absolutely nothing commercial about this album. It’s brilliant.
