The debut album by South London trio mary in the junkyard is deceptive. It sounds like Big Thief, Wolf Alice and Phoebe Bridgers–“big” dark folk with an acoustic core. But it’s also wholly original. They sound like they’ve been playing together for decades, with the lead and backing vocals, strings, and percussion all moving together as one, creeping across the soundscape with a sense of deep foreboding.
In short, it sounds like stuff you’ve heard before done in ways you’ve never heard before, striking the right balance between experimental and catchy, familar and unique, moody and sharp, surreal and Earthy.
I loved this album.
