Mixtapes used to be an art–they’d flow together, song into song, with hijacked beats and loops–and DJ Kay Slay hasn’t forgotten that. Today, it’s often hard to tell the different between a true mixtape and a bootleg or studio leak. Papoose is keeping the tradition alive on his latest release.
Bed Stuy’s Papoose has never really gotten his due. I understand that his late ’80s/early ’90s style may sound dated to some, but how many OG’s are still spitting relevant rhymes, and how many can deftly jump between jailhouse grime and uplifting, positive jams? And who’s relying on Public Enemy samples?!? (“Shut ‘Em Down”). And Michael Jackson hooks!! (“They Don’t Care”).
Features include Dave East and Sheek Louch.
