What’s better than an indie superstar singer-songwriter? Three! Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus have formed like Voltron to become…Boygenius! (Get it, because they’re all girls?). They each take a song.
Dacus has the lead with “Bite the Hand,” a love song about breaking up. “I can’t love you like you want me to” is a simple and straightforward enough refrain, but it’s also got a lot to unpack.
Bridgers is next, with the modern folk song “Me and My Dog,” a sad and moving ballad: “I cried at your show with the teenagers…I wanna be emaciated…I wanna hear one song without thinking of you…I wanna be in a spaceship, just me and my dog and an impossible view.” Gut punching lyrics.
And finally, Baker takes the lead on Stay Down, which may be the most heartfelt of the three–and that’s saying something.
The three ladies will tour together behind a full EP (all three songs plus two more) that’s due in November.
