Excellent production, complex lyrics…Coney Island’s Skyzoo teams up with Apollo Brown from Detroit create a thoughtful, musically-driven album. 808s, strings and piano sound less like samples than original compositions, and lyrics have true vision. Apollo Brown is one of the most interesting borderline underground producers out there. And he’s picked a perfect companion: Skyzoo is a serious-minded emcee (“I thought Jordans and a gold chain was livin’ it up/It is ain’t it?…That’s what they told us…”) with ambitions to make meaningful songs. None of these are toss offs. Even the guest spots are chosen carefully, particularly tapping Joel Ortiz for the single. Ortiz is one of the best, and still only real heads know his name.
A perfect rap album, if you don’t need mainstream sounds to nod your head.
