Band of Heathens have been around forever and certainly have their own dedicated following, but they’ve never really broken out or made their “This is who I am” statement. They’re like the Grateful Dead without the guitar genius of Jerry Garcia. And also because their studio stuff is pretty flat, but live it becomes fantastic. Or they’re like Black Crowes with a powerful front man. Or something. What ‘m trying to say is that they’re right on the verge of being great.
They’re better than so many other similar Americana/jam-twang bands, but being better doesn’t make them feel distinct. All That Remains is a really good showing of how their live staples have evolved over time but sadly probably won’t make them any new fans.
They deserve new fans, though, because they really are very, very good at what they do.
