Now this is a great pop album!
Expert in a Dying Field does not–repeat not–show “growth” or “greater sophistication” or any of the reviewer buzzwords for a third album. Instead, Elizabeth Stokes continues to write very smart lyrics (that are just deep enough to make you think, but not so obscure as to make you lose track of the beat) and incredibly catchy hooks.
Guitar-driven, female-led pop is a very competitive field right now, with bands like Illumanati Hotties, Wet Leg, and Big Thief. Who is the best? My vote is for The Beths.
Standouts: Your Side, I Want to Listen, When You Know You Know, and the title track.
