G.O.A.T.: SUCH GREAT HEIGHTS by The Postal Service (2003)

In 2003, the indie music scene was just beginning to break open.  Arcade Fire was exploding the world.  The music scene was catching up to the internet as bands figured out how to promote themselves on something other than Myspace.  And Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard started exchanging tapes and CDs across the country to Jimmy Tamborello (of Dntel).  Gibbard and Tamborello’s first collaboration was a song called (This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan, for Dntel.  It was okay, but nothing super special.  But when Tamborello recruited Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis to help give some body to the vocals, and to flesh out the skeletal songs, magic happened.  Give Up, which Sub Pop published in 2003, became the label’s second most successful record of all time (first was Bleach by Nirvana) and the driving single became ubiquitous.  It was in movie trailers, advertisements, on TV as the theme to the smash hit Grey’s Anatomy, as a cover by Iron Wine on the soundtrack to one of the era’s most successful indie films, Garden State…It was everywhere.  Also, the video is really cool…
