THE GREATEST OF ALL TUNES TRIBUTE TO THE ROLLING STONES

THE GREATEST OF ALL TUNES (G.O.A.T.) is a series of posts, producing my 100 favorite songs of all time.  The master list is here, and I update it about every two weeks or when I have another 10 songs or so.

Today, I’m starting a long tribute to my favorite rock and roll band of all time: The Rolling Stones.  And it’s gonna take a while.

Over the next several weeks, I’ll be posting covers of TONS of Rolling Stones songs.

I figured this was a neat way to celebrate February, since the Stones are probably the band I love more than any other.

But today, I’m starting not with a song but with my favorite Stones album of all time.…

THE GREATEST ROLLING STONES ALBUM OF ALL TIME: Exile on Main St (1972)

It’s Sophie’s choice.  I couldn’t pick a single song off this album and throw another off the list.  Therefore, before I start my list of the best 40 Stones songs, I’m paying tribute to every single song on Exile on Main Street.

This is the greatest double-album in rock history, the best Rolling Stones album, and probably my favorite all-around record ever.  Entire books have been written about it.  There are lots of strong contenders: Beggar’s Banquet, for example, or Let It Bleed.  But no other Stones album demands to be listened to straight through like this one, and there’s more creativity in these 18 songs than most bands have in their entire lifetimes.

And just so it’s part of my “list” theme, here’s the other best RS albums—just to round out a “top 10” list.  It doesn’t include hits collections, but between over 25 albums of original material and over a dozen live albums, there’s lots to choose from for a top 10…
