The Deconstruction sounds like a very good Eels album. That’s the best way to describe it. The man formerly called The Man Called E has a way with a quiet strum and a gravelly voice—he creates mood, he provides room for the bass to guide the listener…He knows how to write songs. And he’s been doing it for a long time, so it’s no surprise. Like a lot of his albums, The Deconstruction can get a bit…Dark. Especially when it’s an album about the Trump era. But it has some moments of hope, like “You Are the Shining Light,” which tells us we’ll bounce back because we “always do” and the optimistic, “Today is the Day,” which has a funny video…
