#1 Damn the Torpedoes, 1979
It hit #2 on Billboard’s Top 200, spawned three top 100 singles, and at least four of its songs are recognized as some of the greatest rock and roll songs of all time. Coproduced by Jimmy Iovine—one of the best in the business—“Damn” came after Petty had already had a few decent hits, and was recognized as an up-and-comer. Back in the ‘70s, music labels would allow artists to grow naturally and organically—they didn’t demand a smash hit record right out of the gate. And we all should be grateful. Even the Losers, Don’t Do Me Like That, Here Comes My Girl, Refugee, Louisiana Rain, Shadow of a Doubt…Even the lesser known songs, like Century City, You Tell Me, and Louisiana Rain are extraordinary.
This isn’t just Tom Petty’s best record, it’s one of the best albums of all time.
