There are some submissions that I get and as soon as I hear the first few chords I know I’ll be reviewing it. This is one such album.
Kurt Vile is from Philly, and started out as the lead guitarist for “The War On Drugs,” a strong indie band in their own right, but now he’s on the solo tip, on Matador Records.
That first track I referred to above is titled, “Hunchback.” It’s dark and bluesy, like Nobunny or Lou Reed with more fuzz and grit. I’ve read that Kurt Vile is his real name, and if that’s true, rarely has a person been so aptly monikered. It immediatly made me think of a disgusting cabaret (Kurt Weil). And that’s what this is. It’s a totally unique sound, combining the old-fashioned with the indie-fangled. It must be heard to be believed, truly. I see he’s playing my alma mater, Vassar. All I can say is, if I were still a Vasshole, I’d be there.
