The Daptone label is known for modern/vintage soul music, so it’s no surprise that Staten Island’s Budos Band has found a home there. Part Booker T and the MGs, part JBs, this collection of throwback psychedelic funk instrumentals is a fine diversion for a BBQ or a dimly light smoking party. It should be listened to while wearing a brown leather jacket. An incredibly tight afrobeat rhythm section pulses with a salsa beat behind grooving horns and fantastic, cinematic riffs and hooks. They don’t make music like this anymore, and when you hear this, you’ll wonder why.
It screams to be sampled by Ghostface. Buy it before the summer is over.
P.S.
While we’re on the subject of great bands, The Format is giving away Dog Problems, the entire album, for free! Go here!
