I recognize that many hip hop heads have moved on from grimey crimey rap, but I haven’t. Curren$y is great. Alchemist is amazing. They’ve worked together several times before–most notably on the brilliant Covert Coup–and they don’t change it up here: Great stories delivered well over beats that support the content but also step out on their own. Like that piano work on Reese’s Cup. Or the soaring trills on Obsession, adding elegance to Spitta’s verses describing his come up and his desire for the finer things in life. “The stage was set when I took my first breath/I was obsessed/How much money could I get?”
The only complaint is there is a little too many sound clips between the songs. But it’s a minor quibble.
The features are chosen well and include Boldy James, Larry June, Styles P, and, of course, Curren$y’s regular collaborator Wiz Khalifa.
Most excellent.
