IMPERIUS REX by SEAN PRICE

I’ve been hyping Bootcamp Clik for years and years. They’re a collection of hardcore rappers from Brooklyn who have made some of the best gritty underground rap of all time. They founded the Duck Down label, hosting album after album of lyrical genius.

But that was years ago.

In 2015, founding member of the Clik–and one of the two rappers in the Heltah Skeltah duo, passsed away under undisclosed circumstances. Sean Price deserves to be remembered as a pioneer of the rap movement, so if there’s no other reason to buy Imperius Rex, that’s a good one. But there’s other reasons. Bootcamp partners Buckshot, General Steele, and Smif-N-Wessun all show up to provide guest bars on the posthumous record, as to titans of grime rap like Inspectah Deck, Raekwon, Method Man, Styles P, and Prodigy. Even MF DOOM shows up. No, this isn’t the best Sean Price album you’ll find. But pay homage and see what he was up to just before his death, because even the worst Sean Price album (which this is NOT) is better than most rappers ever get.
