WEEKENDS ARE FOR SINGLES: All Covers Edition!

Last week, all originals. This week: Covers.
Let’s start with Chet Faker’s take on an old(ish) Sonia Dada song. Not only is this better than the original, but it sounds like Faker wrote it for himself. The rare example of an absolutely perfect cover….

And speaking of covers that are better than the original, Lydia Loveless nearly beats Prince. But in the end, nobody beats Prince.

Sam Smith may not have improved over the original, but his version of “Fast Car” is still terrific.

Phoebe Ryan does an awesome job covering a two song medley: Ignition by R Kelly and Do You by Miguel. Fantastic.

James Vincent McMorrow’s take on Steve Windwood’s “Higher Love” is slow and moody…

And now let’s move to the deeply soulful, an oldie but a goodie. Jesse Ware covering Bobby Caldwell’s “What You Won’t Do For Love,” a song sampled by Tupac in his own tune “Do For Love.”

From there, let’s go with a cover that kind of feels like a joke—but I bet you’ll still dig it. Heat doing Madonna’s “Dress You Up.”

Here’s the Ratboys covering Velvet Underground….
