The Black Pumas are Grammy Award-winning guitar player Adrian Quesada (famous for playing with no less than Prince) and vocalist Eric Burton. Not Burdon. Burton. But a comparison to the more soul-filled tracks of The Animals wouldn’t be beyond the pale. There’s a definite garage/soul vibe to this album.
The label’s press materials compare this band to Wu-Tang Clan, but I don’t see that. There’s nothing grimey, gangsta, or remotely hip hop here. This is pure hipsway and hard soul–and that’s perfectly legitimate. Not everything has to have a “rap” vibe.
This is a great record. Truly. And if they go on tour, I’m so there.
