“I’m glad you’re happy now in Connecticut. We talked last night and I could tell you’d have enough of it.” That’s a typically personal line from the song “Playing Through a Dip Related Injury,” off Wild Pink’s tremendous debut. Tackling not just romantic woes but also the horror of life in American society, fears of random shootings, etc., the album feels like a perfect “What it must be like to be in college in 2017” story. I especially like “Battle of Bedford Falls,” an epic sprawl with an insistent earworm for a hook. It can get a bit experimental, with feedback and fuzz and strange song titles, but overall that just contributes to the adventure. It’s album with a definite “sound” and theme—nothing here is random—but it’s also full of surprises.
Most highly recommended.
