13. I’m Not Down (London Calling, 1979)
A lesser-known, deep cut from the album, but it’s such a well-crafted song. Thematically, I guess it’s pretty close to a lot of rock songs (e.g., Chumbawumba’s biggest hit), but it feels like it has more depth and weight.

12. Straight to Hell (Combat Rock, 1982)
There is simply no other Clash song like Combat Rock. It’s a long, sprawling piece about war—mostly Vietnam and Southeast Asia—that’s bleak and tough and full of nuance. Musically, the complexity of the intertwining rhythms, bass and drums show how far the band had come in just five short years.

11. Bankrobber (single, 1980)
“Daddy was a bankrobber, but he never hurt nobody. He just liked to live that way, and he loved to steal your money.”
While filming the video, the band acted out a bankrobbery and actually got stopped by the cops. It doesn’t get more punk than that.
