MY MORNING JACKET-“Evil Urges Tour” A to Z

What a great year we’re having!  We’re just halfway done, and already there are several extraordinary contenders for album of the year.  Nas has finally released a classic worthy of Illmatic stature.  Grand Archives released the best Beach Boys album never made.  Lil’ Wayne puts the fun back in hip hop with a studio album that is at least as good as the best of his mixtapes.  And Santogold and War on Drugs produce two amazing debuts.  And then, there’s My Morning Jacket.

This is not a review, this is a reminder. Go buy “Evil Urges.” MMJ has never let you down before, they’re generous live, and this album brings out their funkiest sides. As evidenced by some of the great live performances they’ve delivered this year . . .

A is for Across 110th Street (Bobby Womack)

B is for The Bear, an older song of theirs that I’ve rarely seen them do live.

C is for Cobra, a stellar version from last year.

D is for Dodante.

E is for the title track of their new masterpiece, Evil Urges.

F is for Funkadelic! Hit It and Quit It (Funkadelic)

G is for Gideon, another one of their older songs, but one of my faves.

H is for Hot Fun in the Summertime (Sly Stone cover)

I is for I’m Amazed, off Evil Urges.

J is for James! Cold Sweat (James Brown)

K is for Get Down On It (Kool and the Gang)

L is for Lay Low, off of the Z album, best album of 2007 (I think. Maybe 2006.)

M is for One Big Holiday (with Kirk Hammet of Metallica)

N is for Nuthin’, as in Oh, Sweet Nuthin.

O is for Oh, Lonesome Me, a sweet acoustic version.

P is for an acoustic Poison Cup.

R is for Remnants.

S is for Smokin’ From Shootin’

T is for Tyrone (Erykah Badu)

W is for Z’s What a Wonderful Man, my favorite live song of theirs, hands down.
