Heather McIntosh of Elephant 6 is the brains and backbone of The Instruments, who you’ve probably never heard of. But you should. Their music is mystical and unlike anything else you’ve heard. It’s dark, beautiful, pensive, provocative . . .. I try to describe a few tracks, but words truly fail. “Ode to the Sea,†the lead track, is less atmospheric and less experimental than the other cuts here—it’s actually got a melody—but nearly every song has zero beat.
