Did Herbaliser just release one of the best hip hop albums of the year? Maybe. The majority of the tracks on “Bring Out The Sound” are instrumental beat cuts–exactly what you’d expect from the British team of Ollie Teeba and Jake Wherry, who have been playing this kind of funky music live for decades. The self-proclaimed jazz hip-hopper have worked with some of the best in the biz: Jean Grae, Roots Manuva, MF DOOM, Dilated Peoples…But they’ve always been about much more than the people they bring into the studio with them.
“Bring Out the Sound” is the perfect balance between their amazing and intricate instrumentals and appearances by rappers you probably don’t know but will want to now.
Key tracks: Submarine (which sounds like the theme to a Jason Statham movie), the moody and mellow “Seize the Day” with DJ Just Jack, and Stac’s amazing vocals on “Over and Over.”
