Dar Williams is an indie-minded folk-singer who has been in the business a lot longer than you probably realize. And her new album, Many Great Companions, is kinda like a best of. Actually, it’s more a retrospective–she reworks, acoustically, songs from her 15+ career, with alongside a bunch of truly awesome guests like Sean and Sara Watkins (Nickel Creek), Mary Chapin Carpenter, Gary Louris of the Jayhawks . . . Along with a second CD of new material. Facebook her here, if you’re into that. Get it on iTunes here.
Here’s a free taste:
It’s real good stuff, and it can be yours . . . Free! Here’s how to win it:
1. Be from the U.S.
2. Drop a comment with your e-mail, and tell me why you should be the winner. Best answer gets the CD.
3. Winner will be picked in 7 days, so check your e-mail: If you don’t respond with your address within 24 hours, I reserve the right to move on o the next best comment.
And just because I love it so much, here’s Dar doing The Kinks’ “Better Things.”

Wow. Found the blog via shuffler.fm and you’ve probably just picked up a regular reader. I like what I hear of the Dar Williams disc and would like to throw my hat in the ring for your contest. I’ll probably have to buy it if you don’t give it to me, but that’s okay and not why you should give it to me.
You should give it to me because I still like and use and buy physical CDs, particularly of the indie variety. I would rip it, sure, but I would carry the actual disc around for the next several weeks in my old truck which has a 1-disc CD player and no way to play mp3 files. I would admire the cover from time to time. I would read the liner notes.
Also, I just paid real live money for the BellBoys new release which is being offered for free or whatever you want to pay. I think that gives me good indie music karma for a few days.

nobody writes them like Dar. `she has been a songwriters songwriter for a long time. From my first listen at a Joan Baez show at Town Hall to this day. Dar has changed the way i think, stayed true to her craft and believes and gives back.
This amazing artist had changed my life or can I saw she has changed me…

I can’t think of a single reason why I deserve this more than someone else, but I sure would love to win this. I have all of her other cds, and can’t wait to hear this new one. I got a thrill last year when my brother who is in The Feelies told me that Dar told him that she was a big fan of theirs, and that she tried to get some of The Feelies sound for her last cd. Thank you and best wishes with your blog.

I deserve to win as I own none of her Dar’s previous CDs, and I’d love to be able to gift it to my older sister who’s birthday is coming up!

I wish I could win a copy or buy a copy for my many great companions, some of which I’ve just met at Berkeley Place, but I’ll spread the word about its excellence far and wide if I’m fortunate enough to gain a copy. Thanks for the opportunity.

I first saw Dar perform when I was 16. My dad wouldn’t let me go to the concert alone, so he went with me. About halfway through the concert (it was a small venue) while Dar was talking with the audience she looked over at me and my dad and said “Well, it looks like we have a designated dad in the crowd!” and everyone started laughing. That memory will stay with me forever. Nine years later, I still have this love for Dar’s music and the way she conveys these awesome messages ranging from social justice issues, to political commentary, to personal growth. I know that her music was very influential in my teenage years and both Dar and her music will always have a place in my life
