Every page in this issue is a 2-page spread, accomplished by publishing the comic sideways, so the longer side of the book was horizontal rather than vertical.
Was it just a gimmick? Kinda. I mean, I like Jeff Johnson’s art, but it’s not like he does particularly interesting panel arrangements or page designs. There’s no real reason for the book to look like this. But it’s still a fun change of pace.
Over the course of the series, Wonder Man’s ionic energy source has been contaminating civilians and giving them powers. They’re now the Crazy 8s.
They band together to protect Los Angeles because Wonder Man is that town’s premier hero and he’s out in space fighting crime. No, he’s not. He’s actually in a touring company for Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
The Crazy 8s are obviously comic relief–and with names like Attractive Lad and Glamour Girl, they seem to me to be similar to D.C.’s Legion of Substitute Heroes. It’s a fine tribute. I haven’t tagged the Crazy 8 team because they never appear outside this comic.
