DOCTOR STRANGE #1 (1974)

It’s hard to write a good Dr. Strange book.  But this is one.  This joyfully psychedelic book played over and over with the concept of “magic,” playing against stereotypes and popular myths.

The villain, called Silver Dagger (in his first appearance), literally stabs Dr. Strange in the back with a crystal magic knife that plunges Strange down into a mystic realm…

The story still doesn’t matter all that much–the ideas and the art are what sells it.  And the hookah smoking caterpillar who becomes quite terrifying…
