TALES OF SUSPENSE #84-86 (1966-1967)

Tony Stark is about ready to pull a big “I am Iron Man “ reveal when he has a heart attack.  Strangely enough, that’s exactly when newspapers begin to figure out that Tony and Iron Man are never in the same place at the same time, so Happy Hogan throws some armor on to protect his boss’ secret.

Of course, that’s when Mandarin decides to exact his next big plan to kill Iron Man, and he captures Happy.  Hilarity ensues.  The art continues to be great, the stories continue to be fine.

Meanwhile, Super Adaptoid has risen from his coma in the basement of Avengers Mansion and takes on the powers of multiple Avengers simultaneously.  That’s kind of cool.  But what’s much cooler is this full-page sequence from issue #85, wherein Cap fights Batroc the Leaper.  Stan Lee knows he should shut up, but he just can’t resist inserting a text box in the upper right corner.  At least Batroc’s boot comes out over the text, rather than under it.

Creators: Lee, Colan (Iron Man), Lee, Kirby (Cap).
