Marvel Spotlight #8 (1980): Captain Marvel

Yes, Frank Miller drew this terrible book.  Oh, and Mike Barr wrote it—he’s best known for creating Batman’s “Outsiders” team and otherwise doing solid 1980s work with The Dark Knight.  He’s not known for his work with Captain Marvel.

For good reason.

Miller’s work looks a lot like Jim Starlin’s, and I guess if you’re gonna draw a character (Mar-Vell) that you don’t know well in a genre (science fiction) that you don’t do well, you might as well crib from the best, right?

Nothing important happens, it’s a standard done-in-one fable—literally a fable, since it is a story with a moral that involves animals.

The Twinkies’ subplot with Mar-Vell is better than the main comic.

Creators: Mike Barr and Frank Miller, with a plot assist from Dick Riley
