Farewell, Starlite! by Francis and The Lights

If Phil Collins started making pop music today, this is probably what he’d have sounded like. And I should say, I like Phil Collins—so that’s not an insult. But besides having incredible resemblance to 1980s pop (there’s lots of Peter Gabriel in there, too), Francis and the Lights’ songs are unique—fantastic—and unpredictable. There’s also shades of old-school 1980s R&B/hip hip (I hear Ready for the World behind “I Want You To Shake”), and there’s even an appearance by Bon Iver. After a 2007 EP, appearing on Chance’s Coloring Book, and getting breaks from the likes of Kanye West and Drake, the band is finally coming into their own.
