Captain America: Civil War is set to arrive in theaters soon and we couldn’t be more excited to see how the new film will affect the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The greatest threat that the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes face in the latest cinematic epic is themselves, as allies turn against each other because of politics. It’s fitting that the movie is coming out in an election year.
We already know that Civil War will introduce several new characters to the MCU, including Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) in advance of his own solo feature prepped for 2018. Now it’s looking as though the far-reaching ramifications of the latest Captain America feature will also extend to the small screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the effects of Civil War will stretch all the way to Marvel’s Agents of Shield as well. As the heroes find themselves choosing sides between Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Captain America (Chris Evans) it begs the question of where SHIELD (or the lack thereof) will fall, particularly given the agency’s quasi-legal status as an enforcement and defense agency. THR suggests that Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) is likely to join up with Team Cap, but we wonder if Maria Hill (Cobi Smulders) will share the same view.
For those living under a rock who may be unfamiliar with the premise of the upcoming movie, it’s based on the 2006 story arc of the same name written by Mark Millar. After the devastating fallout and collateral damage of the Avengers’ previous battle (along with some other superhero-related shenanigans), the government feels that additional oversight and regulation of the superhero community is required to ensure the world’s safety. This necessitates a superhero registration act, in which heroes are required to register with the government, revealing their powers and, more importantly, their secret identities. Iron Man feels that the steps are a necessary evil to prevent further catastrophes from occurring while Captain America believes it’s a step down a slippery slope that will lead to a further erosion of civil liberties.
The impact of Civil War has gone beyond movies and television to also touch on video games. A special character pack of downloadable content for the recently released LEGO Marvel’s Avengers will include many characters from the upcoming movie. The DLC will add Agent 13, Black Panther, Captain America, Crossbones, Falcon, the Mark 46 Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, War Machine and Winter Soldier to a game that’s already jam-packed with a veritable cornucopia of comic book staples. Many of these heroes can also be found in more casual offerings at the online platform for Gala Casino. It boasts slot-themed takes on Iron Man, Captain America, and the entire Avengers team, and allows players to line up and test their luck with the legendary heroes from Marvel’s flagship series.
Whatever ends up happening when Civil War hits cinemas, you can count on it shaking the MCU to its core. We expect big things to go down when these heroes go head to head. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait too long before we’re treated to the grudge match of the century (and at least there are plenty of games to play in the meantime!). Captain America: Civil War hits theaters May 6, 2016.
