The evolution of my favorite character, M.O.D.O.K. (or MODOK to his friends). And what an evolution it is! I don’t think there have been any Marvel villains who have inspired more completely insane spin-off variants than ol’ MODOK.
And I’m starting with his first appearance in 1967, all the way through to the end of that decade. I’m pretty sure I’ve found every single canon appearance of MODOK, but if you see I’m missing one, please let me know.
So, MODOK started in the pages of Tales of Suspense issue #94, in which the evil A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics) steal Captain America’s shield and try to break it apart to analyze it. The AIM scientists keep griping about their boss, some dude named MODOK.
The big reveal is that MODOK is a victim of AIM who rose up and took over the organization. He’s an encephalitic who shoots laser beams out of his forehead. Remember: This was 1967, when creativity wasn’t corporate or common. You have to love Jack Kirby.
And in the end, he lay dying. But he was too cool to die.
He’d be back, and back, and back.
And this series will follow him.
