Carol Danvers embraces her role as a superhero and her return to her original “Ms. Marvel” identity by quickly dispatching Stilt-Man in the first few pages of issue #1.

Mostly by “blasting him seven times in the crotch.” She tells us and Jessica Drew the story over lunch, and also about how she saved some kids from getting crushed by a truck, but nobody knew who she was.

So she also hires a publicist.

Then, it’s time for the main story: The Brood invade New York.

Turns out, though, that the Brood are just fleeing to Earth from another alien named Cru. Cru’s race was destroyed by the Brood, and for vengeance she is willing to destroy everyone on Earth to make sure she kills the last of the Brood.

Ms. Marvel takes Cru on and seems to kill her, but we see pieces of her shape-shifting body in space at the end, re-forming. So she’ll be back.

This story is mostly just a lot of fighting, and it’s great–a solid start to turning Ms. Marvel into an icon. Frank Cho does his best busty hottie cover work, but De La Torre’s interior work is much more appropriate for a female-led book, emphasizing heroism over T&A.
