Annihilation: Ronan #1-4 (2006): Tana Nile dies

Ronan lost his title as official “Accuser” because Tana Nile lied and testified that he was a traitor. He’s out for revenge and finds her protected by Gamora, Nebula, and Stellaris. They’re also terrorizing a planet, where Gamora lives as a God.

Lots of rarely used cosmic characters are appearing in the Annihilation Event. It’s very cool for nerds.

Everyone gets to hit Ronan in this book.

But he’s still a badass.

When Ronan and Gamora fight, Glorian uses the power of their combat to gain power. (Remember Glorian? He’s a former disciple of Shaper of Worlds and has similar power.). But as Glorian is attempting to re-shape an entire planet to be in his own image, the Annihilation Wave arrives.

Ronan and Glorian fight it off, defeating a leader in Annihilus’ army, but it leaves Glorian depowered and with some kind of brain damage (it’s not explained). Tana Nile also dies in the fight, and with her dying breath she tells Ronan and Gamora that the Kree government set her up–and admits she was forced to testify against Ronan.

In the aftermath, Ronan and Gamora head to the Kree homeworld to clear Ronan’s name and warn the Kree of the Annihilation Wave.

Of the four miniseries that precede the Annihilation series, this is the weakest. The art is a real problem, and the stakes aren’t high enough–unless you really, really care about Ronan.

It’s still a solid story–keep in mind that Annihilation is a fantastic event. The fact that Ronan’s series isn’t quite as good as the other books simply means it’s not excellent, but it’s still quite good.
