TALES OF SUSPENSE #39 (1963): The First Appearance of Iron Man!

This is the origin of Marvel Studio’s first big star.  It has a good story, but, as usual, Stan’s brother Larry’s script is not as good as a Stan script.   But I’m sure you all know the tale: Tony Stark gets kidnapped and has to make a suit of armor to escape.

I’m also going to take this moment to mention that this book actually went on sale on December 10, 1962.  For the purposes of my examination of every Marvel comic ever, I’m going by publication date–not sale date.  It’s just too hard to track every issue back to the date it actually hit the newsstands.

Remember: Back then, the date on the magazine cover served as a sort of “expiration date”–not a “put on the shelf to sell” date.

And finally, let’s put the first panel above in context…

Creators: Stan Lee (plot), Larry Lieber (script), Don Heck (art)
