Captain America #326 (1987)

On Halloween, Captain America is haunted by the ghosts of villains who he has either killed or failed to prevent from dying, like MODOK and Porcupine.  Then, we see other dead people from Cap’s past—Bucky, Sharon, etc.  In the end, we learn the “ghosts” were created by Dr. Faustus in an effort to drive Cap nuts, but it turns out that Faustus drives himself crazy and is attacked by his own ghost of Red Skull.

Weird.

Plus there’s introspection:

Creators: Mark Gruenwald, Paul Neary
Grade: C-.  It’s not a bad story, particularly for a done-in-one, but the constant hand-wringing in the pages of this comic is getting a little tedious.
