Experimental psychedelic indie. Not always the best three words to find together. Often it’s an excuse for a lot of ponderous jams or fuzzy noise. But not this time.
Sweden’s HOLY have created what they call “ambient wave,” but there’s enough hooks to ground it and enough depth to make it fascinating. Think Flaming Lips or Mercury Rev. And yes, it does measure up to the comparison. If you listen close, in fact, you can hear a little tinge of The Beatles.
Oh, and yes. There are ponderous 7+ minute jams. But unlike so much of the mediocre crap out there on Bandcamp, these are actually songs with structure and purpose, and they take you somewhere different by the time you get to the end.
