When this was published, back in the ’80s, I never gave it any thought.  But these days, with suicide having a high profile and our society being overly sensitive about death, it would have been very controversial.

In so many ways, our discourse has been reduced to name-calling and nonsense, and our language has become increasingly course.  On the other hand, we don’t seem to be able to talk about things like this without being so intense and judgmental–and careful–that we end up not really talking at all.
