THE GREATEST OF ALL TUNES: HALLOWEEN EDITION: The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead by XTC (1992)

THE GREATEST OF ALL TUNES (G.O.A.T.) is a salute to the greatest songs of all time, one song per artist. Want more? Go to the G.O.A.T. Page for all the GOATs so far!

“Let’s begin.” One of the best opening lines of a song ever, and it immediately kicks into an alt-rock, power pop anthem full of hooks and irony. XTC were often guilty of being the smartest band in the room, but the intelligence behind this song about a modern day messiah proves that pop music doesn’t have to be stupid.

The video is great, too. Make sure you check it out.

Further listening: I’m a fan of XTC, but for many they are an acquired taste. Hewing close to their mainstream, I’d recommend that fans of Pumpkinhead check out Making Plans for Nigel, Mayor of Simpleton, Senses Working Overtime, and, of course, Dear God.
