The new Marvel Now! is Marvel NOW. And, as the big two seem to do at least once every year, there will be a full launch of new titles and characters. I think I may finally be at the point where I just don’t care. Image seems to be producing great stuff month after month, their sales numbers are going up, and they do it all without stunts. How? By focusing on great storytelling. That said, Marvel is still producing at least as many good comics as bad ones, and their bad ones usually aren’t unreadably bad. But at the same time, their good ones are just good. Not great. Every year, I find fewer “must reads” and this year there are less Marvel books that I even want to read. DC’s latest rebirth has produced some surprises, and I’m reading a couple more books from them than I used to. Will Marvel make similar, or better, improvements? Here’s what they’re planning: After Civil War II ends, their entire publishing slate will be rejiggered.
WHAT’S MISSING? I haven’t seen solicits for All-New Wolverine, which is a shame because it’s a book I really like. Also haven’t seen much in the way of X-books, which doesn’t surprise me because no matter what Marvel says, they’re clearly putting Inhumans in the forefront and X-people in the back.
NO CHANGE. These books aren’t changing their numbering or their creators:
- Yay!: Power Man and Iron Fist, Spider-Man (Morales version), Punisher, Silver Surfer, Black Panther, Black Widow, Moon Knight, Daredevil, Squadron Supreme, and Ms. Marvel (but only partly yay! because these books should be—and have been—much better than they are). Also, Spider-Woman, a book I’ve been on the fence about, brings in a new artist (Veronica Fish) that I’m excited about—so yay!
- Boo!: Deadpool/DP and The Mercs for Money, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Uncanny Inhumans.
- Whatev: Captain America: Sam Wilson and CA: Steve Rogers, Uncanny Avengers, Patsy Walker: Hellcat (not a bad book, but not a great one), Doctor Strange, Spider-Gwen, Guardians of the Galaxy, Silk, Spider-Man 2099, The Mighty Thor (with a vagina), Thunderbolts, The Totally Awesome Hulk, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Unbelievable Gwenpool
