It can’t be said for sure where the term originated, but the first time “Heavy Metal” appeared in a rock song was in Steppenwolf’s “Born to be Wild.” You know: “Heavy metal thunder!”

Mars Bonfire wrote the song, and he was born on April 21, 1943. So, today is the birthday of Heavy Metal–in purely arbitrary terms. So we’re celebrating with some covers of some of the best known tunes of the genre…
