Steve Gerber died on this day in 2008 from complications from cystic fibrosis.  He is easily one of my favorite comic book writers of all time.  I’ve written lots about him: a top ten, a list of the five craziest characters he created, told you all that Hard Time is one of the greatest comic books of all time, and done a detailed write up of every issue of Omega The Unknown–his Marvel masterpiece.

The picture above is from the 2007 miniseries by Jonathan Lethem and Farel Dalrymple that essentially reimagined Gerber’s Omega series.

As far as I know, it’s the only true comic book “cover version.”  It has many of the same beats and ideas, but ends up in a totally different direction.  Gerber himself eventually endorsed it (although he’d originally hated the idea–he and Marvel had parted ways decades before, under bad terms).

To mark the anniversary of his death, I thought I post a few panels from each Omega comic–the idea of a comic book cover version of another comic is so cool.

And the 2007 series even ends with a Freddie Kreuger-ish tribute to Elf With A Gun.
