STEINSKI-“ What Does It All Mean? 1983-2006”

Tommy Boy D.J. and old school remixing legend Steve Stein is getting a retrospective on the illegal art label. So who the hell is Steve Stein? As half of Double Dee & Steinski, he’s one the men behind the classic “Lessons” street tapes, which included “Lesson 3 (The History Of Hiphop),” a classic DJ mix that you can’t find anymore, anywhere. Screw P. Diddy. If anyone invented the remix, it started here. Without Steinski, we arguably would never have had DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, or Girl Talk. He’s also the mastermind behind “The Motorcade Sped On,” which mixed used news broadcasts about JFK’s assasination over a dancemusic bed. In poor taste? Maybe. Yet, at the same time, remarkably compelling.

All of the above and more are on this double disc, as well as remixes of 3d Bass (“Product of the Environment”) and tons of classic old school platters. Some of this material may date back to the ‘80s and ‘90s, but it sounds fresher than lots of the stuff you hear today.

I’m heartily recommending this.
