Pterodactyl is a band of extremes. Crunchy guitar psychedelic jams that either go on forever or are way too short. Compare “Blue Jay” to “Polio,” and you’ll see what I mean. The former clocks in at a minute-and-a-half, and stops just when your neck grabs the beat and starts bobbing your head. The latter winds and careens so far you can’t wait to hear where it ends up. Listen to the 30-minute song, below, and you’ll see how far the band can take it. It’s heavy metal for the indie set–thick noise, with multiple layers
The band’s eponymous debut will be released on April 24 on Brah, an imprint of one of my favorite labels, Jagjaguwar.
The band are from Ohio moved through Brooklyn and ended up in Connecticut, or something like that. Not that it matters. The music is powerful and rough, and I’m sure they’re incredible live. Check ’em out.
